See, this is why Stephen Amell is my guy.

We make no bones about the fact that we love DC’s CWverse superheroes. Arrow and The Flash have taken up lots of bandwidth on this site, and as each show gets better and better, that isn’t going to change. At the same time, I give a lot of crap to the movie side of DC’s offerings. And that probably isn’t going to change anytime soon either.

Anyway, a shockwave was sent through the interwebs when Oliver Queen himself questioned Warner Brothers’ approach to their DC Cinematic Universe.

Speaking to AMC Theaters for their weekly Arrow post-show discussion, the Arrow star was blunt about how he felt Warner and DC treated his fellow CW superhero Grant Gustin (aka Barry Allen, aka The Flash) on the day after his show broke ratings records for the studio. If you don’t recall, one of the films announced was a Flash movie for 2018 starring Ezra Miller.

So what did Amell think?

I thought that the way that Warner Brothers announced the slate of DC movies could have been handled better. And I think someone like Grant Gustin, who has just launched an iconic character like the Flash to record-breaking numbers, numbers that far-surpassed Arrow’s numbers, he should have been given a wider berth than two episodes before another actor was announced to play his character.

Bravo, Mr. Amell. We made pretty much the same point when we covered the DC movie announcement too. Also, this isn’t the first time Amell has spoken up for his crimson-clad counterpart. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal in October, he had this to say about The Flash controversy.

I feel like it should be Grant doing the movie. But the important thing to remember is just because Grant Gustin plays the part of Barry Allen doesn’t mean Ezra Miller can’t also play Barry Allen. There can be different interpretations of the character. Anyone who is a fan of the comics knows the Flash character is one of the forces that leads to parallel universes.

To be honest, I think Flash and Arrow are probably better off being kept separate from the DC movies. I mean, at this point, who even knows if the movies are going to be any good? In the meantime,The CW’s slate of shows is getting bigger and more expansive. Who knows? Maybe a Firestorm or Atom spinoff series won’t be too far behind

While the nerd in me wishes they could all somehow be connected, WB/DC has never really viewed their superhero properties that way. In fact, their approach has always been to keep everybody separate, despite owning all of the rights to all of the characters (unlike Marvel, who farmed out their biggest characters to other studios before getting into the game for themselves in 2008).

I played this game back in 2006 when Smallville and Superman Returns were battling it out among fans for the live action Superman legacy. And just like I did nearly a decade ago, I’m going to throw my lot in with the guys on TV.
