Marvel Studios has just announced it is starting production on Captain America: Civil War, the first installment of “Phase 3” of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Filming is currently commencing in Atlanta, but the production will span the globe with filming to take place in Germany, Puerto Rico, and Iceland. Since it’s also the third film in the Captain America saga — with the Russo brothers returning to direct — you would think that the film would be following up on the events of The Winter Soldier. However, the official plot synopsis and cast list make it sound more like Avengers 2.5.

This is not a complaint by the way.

Captain America: Civil War picks up where Avengers: Age of Ultron left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.

I believe this is the first confirmation of the movie’s plot line, and it does seem to borrow heavily from the comic story of the same name. Though, is anyone else finding it fishy that once the team finally diversifies and adds more POCs and women to the roster, that’s when the authorities start to give a crap about “collateral damage?”

Interestingly, there is also no mention of how Cap and Falcon’s search for Bucky factors into the plot, but it must since Sebastian Stan is listed as part of the cast. And speaking of the cast, I have no idea how they are going to jam pack all of these characters into the film.

Apart from already announced return of Evans as Cap and Robert Downey, Jr. as Iron Man, the film will also feature Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Anthony Mackie as Falcon, Paul Bettany as The Vision, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Don Cheadle as War Machine and Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch. In addition, Marvel has confirmed that Paul Rudd — who is next up in the MCU batter’s box with Ant-Man in July — will be part of the Avengers team next May.

Moreover, the film will also feature Chadwick Boseman debuting as Black Panther, Emily VanCamp returning as Sharon Carter, Daniel Brühl as Baron Zemo, Frank Grillo returning as Crossbones, William Hurt reprising his The Incredible Hulk role as General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, and the just-announced Martin Freeman in an unnamed role.

That is one massive cast. I know I said Age of Ultron suffered from feeling over-stuffed, but I can’t imagine how the Brothers Russo are going to balance all of the characters and plot lines from a film that, on paper, looks to be double-stuffed. That said, The Winter Soldier was such a great film that I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. For now.

Still, since the Cap franchise is my favorite of all the MCU films, I’m definitely looking forward to this next installment. Hopefully, it’ll be an improvement over Age of Ultron
