The Inconvenient Truth In Advertising

So recently Rose McGowan made headlines expressing outrage over the X-Men: Apocalypse billboard ad that showcases Ivan Ooze, I mean Apocalypse, choking Mystique, claiming that it promotes violence against women.

Fox has since issued an apology for the billboard. Which I think was the right call for the studio. Another right call would also be for Fox to apologize for the fustercluck that is X-Men: Apocalypse itself but I digress.

Now while I personally like McGowan, I have to keep it 100 and say the timing and her complaint is more than a bit suspect, not to mention hypocritical.

It was around this time last year (almost to the date in fact) that McGowan made headlines for incendiary remarks against LGBTQs.

Is this not the same Rose McGowan who starred in Scream, Jawbreaker, Grindhouse, and Conan?

Funny how no one had complaints when Wolverine murdered a woman of color in X2: X-Men United.

Just as I’m willing to bet no one would’ve had any complaints if Jubilee or Storm had been attacked in the ad.

Always a pleasure McGowan. Same time next year??

  1. LOL….” Another right call would also be for Fox to apologize for the fustercluck that is X-Men: Apocalypse itself but I digress.” I lifted out and LOVE that quote from your article, Dennis R. Upkins! LOL

Thanks for calling out the trendy, hipster Hypocrite Also Known As Rose McGowan, an individual who has directly profited from starring in movies depicting violence against women and who has played specific roles that have meted out such violence to said female characters.

The billboard ad didn’t bother me one bit because I know that the character Mystique has super powers and in that scene had met her match in the form of Apocalypse. Super powered mutants or aliens or superheroes don’t get special gender-based treatment in my universe. They fight along side males and clean clocks and in turn get their clocks cleaned. Hello BLACK WIDOW.

I agree that you wanna bet if Storm had been in that promo pic you would not have heard a peep. Now, Jubilee is different because she looks all frilly and flowery and lip gloss “girly/”

Bet people would not have liked Psylocke being on the receiving end of the Apocalypse throat clencher, too, but in seeing how Olivia Munn rolls these days, she’d probably be the first to be pumping up how ruff and tuff and bad@$$ she is so she wouldn’t have an objection, but maybe her fans would. Who can say.

  2. Haven’t seen any Rose McGowan films or tv shows, so I can’t comment on that, but you really think there wouldn’t have been a peep if it had been a non-white woman being choked? Maybe I’m just insufficiently cynical. As for the X-Men United thing, why should people complain about Wolverine killing one of the villains?
