2017 is simply not here for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

First there was epic debacle known as #IronCyst.

Now the shark has substantially been jumped with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Synopsis: Peter Quill and his fellow Guardians are hired by a powerful alien race, the Sovereign, to protect their precious batteries from invaders. When it is discovered that Rocket has stolen the items they were sent to guard, the Sovereign dispatch their armada to search for vengeance. As the Guardians try to escape, the mystery of Peter’s parentage is revealed.

Unlike most, I didn’t drink the proverbial Kool-Aid and buy into the all the hype the original Guardians got upon its release. It was a great film and well executed to be sure. However, with the movie being more flash and less substance I was skeptical that the sequels could carry the franchise and knew the quality of the storytelling would inevitably fall off as a result.

It truly is a burden being right as often as I am.

While the first film was an homage to the 80s summer blockbusters (with an excellent nostalgic soundtrack to boot), its lesser sequel attempts to go for psychadelic drug fueled theme of the 70s with a much inferior musical playlist that I’d sooner forget about.

The same gags and jokes were regurgitated from the first film to the point of ad nauseum. Once again, this is a case of Marvel/Disney going back to the same well too many times.

Baby Groot had some a few amusing scenes which reminds us again that Vin Diesel is definitely underrated and underestimated as an actor.

While the role he had was sub par, Kurt Russell delivered an excellent performance with what little he had to work with.

From Howard the Duck, to Ving Rhames to Sylvester Stallone, the film provided some great cameos.

With that being said, the international treasure known as Michelle Yeoh should generally NEVER be reduced to a cameo. A bigger role should’ve been written for her which definitely would’ve saved this film.

Although it’s awesome that Disney/Marvel knew to cast Michelle Yeoh in one of their films, they could’ve saved themselves the embarrassment and racefail and actually cast her as the Ancient One in Dr. Strange: Imperial Wizard.

Sadly not all cameos are great ones. The ratchet one known as Miley Cyrus also voices a robot in the film.

Why Disney? Why?

In a fit of desperation to be edgy and relevant, Vol. 2 also goes for more crass and adult humor. The type one would find in Deadpool. I would not be comfortable taking my kids to see this given some of the jokes and language used. I have a serious grievance with this. It’s one thing if a film is rated R. But when it’s marketed and aimed at children as a family friendly Disney film, the content should reflect that.

Save your money and skip this flick or at least wait till DVD. Wonder Woman comes out next month and you can already see Vin Diesel and Kurt Russell in The Fate of the Furious.

This movie gets a C-/D+ and that’s namely because of the saving grace that is Michelle Yeoh. Seriously, she needs her own franchise in the MCU or DCEU like yesterday.
