To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before has finally dropped on Netflix.
The film, adapted from Jenny Han’s book of the same name, is about 16-year-old Lara Jean Song Covey (Lana Condor) whose love life goes from fantasy to out of control when the love letters she had written to every boy she’s loved — five in total — are mysteriously mailed out. Of course, the focus of the film is the teenage romantic comedy surrounding Lara Jean, but I could not help but notice something else.
Lara Jean is a fashion icon.
Every one of Lara Jean’s outfits in the film, whether it is her daily school outfit or her lounging at home look, is flawless. Each outfit is timeless and could actually reflect the John Hughes rom-com era, which the film does pay homage to, while still fitting in today’s society. Lara Jean even had a Pretty in Pink look in one scene where she is making a deal with one of her crushes, Peter (Noah Centineo).
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before costume designer Rafaella Rabinovich told Fashionista that she drew inspiration from “’90s issues of Vogue, fashion from the Clinton era, and K-pop, which speaks to both Lara Jean’s heritage and current fashion trends.” It worked.
From the braid crown from Homecoming to the military boots from Etsy, Lara Jean always looked classy and chic. Each of her outfits reflected what she was going through in each scene and act. I also couldn’t help but notice the changing color scheme as Lara Jean went through the cycles.
One of my favorite outfits was worn during the party scene — an embroidered blue statin bomber jacket mixed with a Wednesday Adams-style dress. The entire thing just oozed innocent, which Lara Jean is, with the jacket adding in a little bit of fun.
As a fan of the book series, I found that the best Easter egg, which could have been unintentional, was the yellow cardigan shown during a school scene. In the book, Lara Jean is identified as a Hufflepuff in the Harry Potter world, so seeing her wear a bright yellow cardigan left me pleasantly surprised.
I noticed Lara Jean was given some hints of pink throughout the film, which showcased her moments of awkwardness and, again, innocence. She wore pink while negotiating the relationship terms with Peter, when Peter picked her and Kitty (Anna Cathcart) up, calling Margot (Janel Parrish) over Skype, when being confronted by Josh (Israel Broussard), hanging out with Peter’s friends, and during the idea that a “sex tape” was released. I see what you’re doing, Rafaella.
As Lara Jean became more confident, we saw more boldness in her costume. Now she wore red — when she got in the hot tub, confronting ‘mean girl’ Gen (Emilija Baranac), confronting Josh, and finally admitting her feelings for Peter. Again, I am loving these outfit choices — a wholesome school outfit mixed with a bold color choice.
Each of these pieces represented a different moment in Lara Jean’s life and she looked stylish each time.
Fortunately, these looks are obtainable for the audience. According to the Observer, Rabinovich mixed vintage fashion with a bit of Forever 21 to create these looks. Some of these clothing choices were from Forever 21 and can even be purchased from ModCloth.
I just know that I need these looks. Lara Jean may have fallen in love with a boy, but I’ve fallen in love with her closet and the symbolism behind it all.
