Earlier this week, 20th Century Fox released a new trailer for Alita: Battle AngelFrom visionary filmmakers James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez, the film stars Rosa Salazar, Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, Jackie Earle Haley and Keean Johnson.

The film is based on Yukito Kishiro’s manga Battle Angel Alita, and has been a passion project in the making for almost 18 years. As a huge fan of both Rodriguez and Cameron, I can honestly say, this trailer has gotten me hyped up for this movie six ways to Sunday. Not only are we treated to some of the insane action we expect from a Rodriguez action movie, but also the pensive world-building of master storyteller Cameron. More than that however, this trailer really establishes the expert character work these mad geniuses are known for, deliberately focusing on the soulful and humanistic traits that make Alita herself more than just a weapon. Can’t wait to see the full thing come to life next February!

Alita: Battle Angel will be released February 14, 2019.

Directed by Robert Rodriguez and produced by James Cameron and Jon Landau. Screenplay by James Cameron, Laeta Kalogridis, and Robert Rodriguez. Based upon the manga series “GUNNM” by Yukito Kishiro

Starring Rosa Salazar, Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, Jackie Earle Haley, and Keean Johnson.

SYNOPSIS
From visionary filmmakers James Cameron (Avatar) and Robert Rodriguez (Sin City), comes Alita: Battle Angel, an epic adventure of hope and empowerment. When Alita (Rosa Salazar) awakens with no memory of who she is in a future world she does not recognize, she is taken in by Ido (Christoph Waltz), a compassionate doctor who realizes that somewhere in this abandoned cyborg shell is the heart and soul of a young woman with an extraordinary past. As Alita learns to navigate her new life and the treacherous streets of Iron City, Ido tries to shield her from her mysterious history while her street-smart new friend Hugo (Keean Johnson) offers instead to help trigger her memories. But it is only when the deadly and corrupt forces that run the city come after Alita that she discovers a clue to her past — she has unique fighting abilities that those in power will stop at nothing to control. If she can stay out of their grasp, she could be the key to saving her friends, her family and the world she’s grown to love.

  1. Wasn’t this film supposed to come out this year? Also, isn’t this just another example of a live-action adaptation of an anime (or in this case, manga) where all the characters are played by non-Asian actors?
