In anticipation of the film’s theatrical and streaming release on Friday, April 23, Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have released the opening seven minutes of Mortal Kombat, the reboot of the famed 1995 adaptation of the legendary fighting game. Watch it below in all its gory glory:
In these opening moments, we get to see the beginnings of the blood feud between Sub-Zero, played by The Raid’s Joe Taslim, and Scorpion.
Repositioning Scorpion, née Hanzo Hasashi, as more samurai than ninja makes sense when you cast someone with the pedigree of Hiroyuki Sanada. The fact that the opening of the movie feels more Twilight Samurai than your typical video game adaptation is a testament to the talent involved.
Mortal Kombat opens this Friday on HBO Max and in theaters everywhere!
