During ESPN’s Broadcast of NBA Countdown before Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals, Marvel Studios released a brand new trailer for Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings. The film features Shang-Chi (Simu Liu), a young super hero and martial artist whose journey of self-discovery unfolds in this never-before-seen origin story.
As the son of the real Mandarin of the Marvel Cinematic Universe aka Wenwu (Tony Leung), Shang-Chi escapes to San Francisco to start a new life away from his father’s treacherous empire. Unfortunately, his father finds him and is brought back to China. Wenwu hopes his son can join him by his side and eventually take over the evil terrorist organization, The Ten Rings.
In the trailer, we see a bit more of the power of the ten rings that Wenwu wears and exactly how it works. He uses the rings to commit several crimes, including murder, which causes a young Shang-Chi to doubt joining his father’s side. We see some sequences of young Shang-Chi as he begins his training and then the skills be put to good use.
Michelle Yeoh makes an appearance as a mentor to adult Shang-Chi telling him that he is both his mother — who we see is NOT Yeoh’s character — and his father. The fight scenes are pretty amazing, which is not surprising coming from fight coordinator, Cheng Kai-Chung aka Andy Cheng, best known for his work with Jackie Chan.
There also is an Easter Egg in the trailer where we see the Abomination from 2008’s The Incredible Hulk fighting Doctor Strange‘s Wong (Benedict Wong) in a betting ring. We’re betting on Wong. Maybe all of the Asians from the MCU will make an appearance in Shang-Chi? That would be pretty cool and possible, since there aren’t many to begin with.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Shang-Chi and the Legend of The Ten Rings premieres September 3 in theaters everywhere.
