What do you get when you have a story set in a futuristic medieval world, centered on a character dynamic akin to Pedro Pascal and the Child(-ren) in his care these days? You get Nimona!
Based on ND Stevenson’s 2015 graphic novel of the same name, the story follows Ballister Boldheart, a knight who has been framed for a crime he didn’t commit. To help prove his innocence is Nimona, a mischievous teenage girl with the ability to shapeshift — one whom Ballister has been trained to destroy. But of course, there wouldn’t be much of a story if he were to kill her off upon first meet, and in the bigger scheme of things, she is his only hope in clearing his name.
Netflix started hyping up the film with the release of the teaser trailer yesterday. The graphic novel it’s based off of has been hailed for its LGBTQ themes, and so it only makes for perfect timing in having the film’s release align with the end of Pride Month on June 30.
Nimona is directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane. It stars Chloë Grace Moretz, Riz Ahmed, and Eugene Lee Yang as the leads, joined alongside a cast made up of Frances Conroy, Beck Bennett, Lorraine Toussaint, RuPaul Charles, and Indya Moore.
