The DCU’s Supergirl Has Been Found!

News has been circulating throughout the rumor mill that the search for Supergirl in James Gunn’s new DC Cinematic Universe (aka the DCU) has been underway for the past few days. According to those rumors, buzzy talent like Emilia Jones (CODA) and Meg Donnelly (The Winchesters) were among the top contenders for the role. However, the cape has officially been passed down to none other than House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock.

Officially broken by Deadline, and confirmed by the re-shared post from Gunn, Alcock will be taking on the coveted role of Kara Zor-El in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and (I’d wager) in some sort of a cameo in next year’sSuperman: Legacy.

Here’s the post from Gunn:

Alcock first blew everyone away with her stellar portrayal of the younger Rhaenyra Targaryen in the first half of the first season of HBO’s House of the Dragon, before being replaced within the narrative (which spans several years) by Emma D’Arcy, when Rhaenyra grows into an adult.

In some ways, many will be disappointed that a talented actress such as Sasha Calle, who portrayed the character in last year’s The Flash film, is being replaced so soon; especially given she’s an actress of color and was one of the film’s very few bright spots. However, in my opinion, given the DCEU absolutely needed to die, and the only way to restore the potential of this franchise to its full glory worthy of the source material it’s adapting is by going fully scorch Earth, this is a necessary sacrifice. And Alcock is a terrific fit.

We’ll see more as further news develops for Superman: Legacy and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. But I think the future of the DCU is, at minimum, seeming brighter and better with every new confirmed announcement. Get ready to look up in the sky again folks!
