Zac Efron and Joey King star as Chris Cole and Zara Ford in A Family Affair. The new rom-com will be released June 28 on Netflix.
A surprising romance kicks off comic consequences for a young woman, her mother and her movie star boss as they face the complications of love, sex, and identity.
“Inevitably, opportunities present themselves and it’s kind of, if something’s happening or frankly if you forget a line, it’s really great to know that you can go off script a bit and feel safe that your partner is in it with you, your scene partner is in it with you,” Efron explained. “So we had a lot of fun and it felt really kind of natural. Some of the tangents we went on, actually, a lot of them end up in the film.”
King then continued, adding, “I think in terms of how Zac challenged me, but in a good way, in improv was you could really take a topic and run anywhere with it. That was so fun because you really had to be so present, because Zac could literally just hit you with the wildest improv line that took us down a completely different path, which was always so much fun because it took such unexpected turns, which I think in the end made things so much funnier.”
We discussed the fun of improv, discovering or relating to new things about their roles while filming, what they enjoyed most about the dynamic between their characters, and bloopers.
