After the teaser trailer set the intenet ablaze back in January, Amazon MGM Studios has finally dropped an official trailer for the upcoming live action Masters of the Universe to give viewers a better sense of the movie’s story and better look at its characters.
(BTW, the studio must have taken notes because they replaced the MGM lion with Battle Cat. You’re welcome, internet.)
The consensus from fans after the teaser reveal was that Travis Knight and company were giving us a more faithful live action interpretation than imagined. With many of the rumors and “leaked” set photos hinting at significant portions of the story taking place on Earth, a lot of fans presumed we’d be getting a rehash of the 1987 Dolph Lundgren B-movie classic.
Instead, like the teaser before, the official trailer is very Eternia-focused and shows just how much Prince Adam, played by Nicholas Galitzine, remembers about his home world as he assembles its champions to take on the evil hordes of Snake Mountain. We even get clearer looks at both He-Man’s “Heroic Warriors” — like Ram-Man and Mekanek (and is that a SkySled?!) — as well as Skeletor’s “Evil” ones, including Trap Jaw in all his bionic glory.
Speaking of those Evil Warriors, one of the main questions coming out of the teaser was what Jared Leto would sound like as the big bad. Would he mimic the classic meme-able voice of Alan Oppenheimer or would he go with his own take? From the brief moments we get to hear in the trailer, it sounds like Leto is leaning more into Frank Langella territory than anything else.
As for the story, it seems that the film will take a page from Kevin Smith’s Revelation animated series on Netflix and show an Eternia after Skeletor has taken power and Teela must find Adam to reclaim his birthright as the most powerful man in the universe.
Additionally, Mattel is announcing a special “Become Eternian” digital promotion ahead of the movie.
Basically, fans can log into the website above, snap a selfie and take a short quiz to reveal their Eternian destiny. But this isn’t your standard, run-of-the-mill Buzzfeed quiz. Once your Eternian identity is revealed, you can even bring your alter-ego to life with made-to-order merch including mugs, t-shirts, and more.
Here’s hoping they’ll use this data to help make custom 5.5-inch action figures one day too.
Masters of the Universe will have the power on June 5.
