Pixar’s Approach to Making ‘Lightyear’ a Sci-Fi Epic

Pixar may be known for its originals, but the animation studio has also produced a few sequels and prequels for its unforgettable films. While the Toy Story films may have given us a glimpse at Woody’s history, Lightyear serves as the definitive origins story for the brave space ranger that we all know and love. But rather than follow the character as a toy, the spinoff is presented to us as one of Andy’s favorite Sci-Fi films. As such, director Angus MacLane assembled a group of talented artists to achieve that cinematic look and feel that one gets when watching a Sci-Fi movie like Star Wars and Aliens.

‘Lightyear’ Artisans on Film’s Themes and Achieving the IMAX Experience

Time is a construct of which we are all familiar. It’s the universal truth that there is simply never enough of it. Which makes it the perfect theme for Pixar’s Lightyear. Billed as their first Sci-Fi epic, the Toy Story spinoff is an origins story — and film that Andy watched as a kid — for the title character who accidentally maroon’s his entire crew on an uninhabited planet.

NOC Review: Behold ‘The Batman’

What does it mean to truly capture the essence of Batman? In the past 33 years, we’ve had three big budget, big screen franchises starring The Caped Crusader. And each time, at one point or another, we’ve more than likely heard the phrase “the definitive version of Batman” uttered among colleagues, friends, and fanboys. However, in these 33 incredible years, which have seen their shares of highs and lows with adaptations of the mythology, there surprisingly has never been a truly detective-oriented Batman story put to live action film. Until now.

Sometimes there are movies that just come into your life, and live rent free in your brain days or weeks after you’ve seen them. Furthermore, when you see them again, you still smile, or laugh, or get goosebumps. The Matrix in 1999. The Fellowship of the Ring in 2001. The Dark Knight in 2008. Is ‘Dune’ Truly a White-Savior Story?

Not according to Denis Villeneuve.

Recently, members of the press, including The Nerds of Color, were given the privilege of speaking directly with the visionary director behind Dune. During the conversation, Villeneuve was asked about Dune being an example of the White Savior trope, among many other questions, and he wanted to make it specifically clear that while many have taken the surface-level concept of the story and expressed condemnations for it based on that, interpreting the story as such would actually be missing the true point of it.
