As I write this, reports have recently come in that our pal, Gabriel Iglesias, is currently recovering from COVID, so before we get into it, we want to wish him a very rapid recovery and all of our best wishes.

Today also marks the debut of Eric Bauza and Iglesias’ new film, Space Jam: A New Legacy! And to celebrate the return of the Tune Squad, we, at The Nerds of Color, were lucky enough to speak with Bauza and Iglesias about their roles in the new movie. Before we begin, here’s a bit about them.

The movie event of the year is approaching! That’s right! Dune is finally coming out, this year, on October 1! I’m so thrilled for this movie, and have been for the past year, given the pandemic prevented us from seeing it. Everything that we’ve seen so far has been astonishing to say the least.

‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’ Takes Over Six Flags

Earlier this week, Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, CA got jammed (I know. As a Parks and Rec fan I shouldn’t do anything to glorify scumbag Jeremy Jamm, but the pun was right there, okay?)! And the Looney Tunes took over, with their good friends, Don Cheadle, Eric Bauza, and King James himself, Lebron James!

The New ‘Dune’ Trailer has The Spice! Plus Q&A from the Cast and Director

This morning, Warner Bros. unveiled the first trailer for the most anticipated movie event of the year — the long awaited, big budget adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune. Directed by visionary master, Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049, Arrival, Sicario), and starring literally every big name in Hollywood — Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem — the trailer gave us our first glimpse of the members of House Atreides, Arrakis (the planet commonly referred to as Dune), and of course, giant motherf**king sandworms! Given Villeneuve’s work visually and thematically, as well as the charismatic, strong leads anchoring his vision, I think it’s safe to say WB has a utter game changer on their hands! See for yourselves:

‘Smallfoot’ Layers Fun with Deep Thoughts; Common, Gina Rodriguez Talk Art and Activism

What if, instead of humans not believing in Bigfoot or the Abominable Snowman, it was the other way around? That’s the surface premise of Warner Brothers Animation’s Smallfoot, opening September 28, and if the humor inherent in that flip-the-script premise, plus amazing computer animation, a star-studded voice cast, and a bunch of songs by Broadway veterans, weren’t enough to make this the rare family film that family members of all ages can actually enjoy together, it gets a little deep, too.

Why It Matters When Women of Color Play Love Interests

I tweeted this over a month ago from The Nerds of Color handle, when I was excited about the Zendaya news and wanted to quickly hop on the celebrations. Suffice to say the tweet raised some eyebrows. The tweet fails to mention other recent castings or acknowledge the other women of color who came before them, in both film and TV. And from a feminist point of view, the inclusion of romance in a film is often considered a disservice to the female character (coughBruce/Natcough). The complex ways in which women of color are portrayed on screen is worth exploring, so let’s take a closer look at that now. How far have we come in terms of representation? And what does it mean to show a woman of color being loved?

Introducing: Mary Jane Watson

Okay my fellow NOCs, there are just a few truths we need to acknowledge when it comes to Spider-Man on the big screen. Out of five films, only one of them, Spider-Man 2, was any good. The rest were bloated messes that robbed Spidey of any and all joy. Tobey Maguire was a decent Peter Parker but not the best Spidey. Andrew Garfield was just the opposite. Spider-Man was done an injustice.

Battle Angel Alita Lead Role Once Again Devoid of Asian American Prospects

In 2015, Nerdist announced that the live-action adaptation of the famed Japanese anime had been revived by directors James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez. Battle Angel Alita, a post-apocalyptic sci-fi action manga/anime written by Yukito Kishiro, is set in the 26th century and follows the female cyborg Alita, as she trains to become the world’s most deadly assassin. The latest report from the Robert Rodriquez/Jame Cameron production reveals that the filmmakers have their top three actresses for the lead role: Maika Monroe, Zendaya (who is the front runner), and Rosa Salazar. In other words: more bad news for Asian American actresses.
