Casting for Big Hero 6 Goes Big on Diversity

Back in May, I wrote about Marvel and Disney getting ready to start a big promotional push for the upcoming animated movie Big Hero 6 later this year. At that time only a few names had been announced for the voice actors: Jamie Chung as Go Go Tamago and T.J. Miller as Fred. Maya Rudolph was announced as part of the cast but was tied to an unnamed role. Today, Disney finally announced the actors for the rest of the voice cast.

Cast as Hiro, the half-Japanese and half-Caucasian lead of the movie, is Ryan Potter (best known for his lead role in Nickelodeon’s Supah Ninjas), who is actually half-Japanese, half-Caucasian. That announcement by itself caught my attention as I would not have been surprised if they had cast a voice actor that did not match the background of the animated character.

However, the casting of actors of color does not just end there. In addition to Jamie Chung as Go Go Tamago, there’s also Genesis Rodriguez as Honey Lemon, Damon Wayans Jr. as Wasabi, Daniel Henney as Hiro’s older brother Tadashi, and Maya Rudolph as Aunt Cass. I daresay this could be one of the most diverse voice casts of any Disney animated film ever!

Hats off to Disney for casting voices that match the animated characters backgrounds and, more importantly, embracing the opportunity to cast these diverse voice talents. I, for one, would love to see more thought go into casting diversity beyond just voiceover but this is a great step forward and makes me want to see Big Hero 6 even more.

Big Hero 6 opens November 7, 2014.
