Nike and Warner Bros. Re-Introduce ‘Space Jam’ to a New Generation of Sneakerheads

For nearly three decades, the words “Space Jam” brought to mind one shoe. The iconic Jordan XI, in a special black and concord colorway.

Now, with Space Jam: A New Legacy — about to hit theaters and streaming on July 16 — establishing, well, a new legacy, it’s time for a new generation of sneakerheads to have Space Jams of their own. Enter Nike and Converse, who have revealed a whole line of apparel and footwear tied to the release of the new film.

“The biggest moment in the movie for our characters is the final game,” said Maverick Carter, a producer on the film and long-time collaborator with star LeBron James. “It culminates into this epic showdown with real consequences for everyone playing. The game matters. So when a kid sees the characters wearing Nike gear, their imagination makes the connection that Nike gives you the tools to uncover the best version of yourself.”

Nike is also hoping the new Space Jam film will do for the LeBron 19 what the original did for the Jordan XI: essentially making the shoe synonymous with the movie.

According to Nike Basketball footwear designer Jason Petrie, the new shoe was inspired by the futuristic magic behind the movie.

“In designing the LeBron 19, we were definitely guided by what was happening in the film,” said Petrie. “We wanted to give LeBron a brand-new feeling that was synonymous with an otherworldly, space-age kind of look.”

Meanwhile, Converse is shining the spotlight on the Tune Squad themselves, featuring the classic Looney Tunes characters into their designs. This includes the Lola Bunny Pro Leather, which includes a smooth perforated leather design with a fur Star Chevron logo and an embroidered Lola graphic on the heel, outlined by pops of pink mesh lining.

The Space Jam: A New Legacy collection from Nike and Converse releases in July on nike.com, the SNKRS app, and at select retailers.

Space Jam: A New Legacy will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, releasing in theaters nationwide July 16 and available in the U.S. on HBO Max for 31 days from theatrical release.
