Warning: Spoiler alert for the first episode of Loki
When WandaVision premiered, fans speculated that the series Big Bad was going to be Mephisto, a devil-like demon from Hell, and stuck with the idea that he will eventually be introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When he did not appear in WandaVision, many fans hope for the red devil were lost until the premiere of Marvel’s new series Loki. Obviously, when the first episode of Loki dropped – fans observed every little detail – including a scene which featured TVA agent Mobius (Owen Wilson) traveling to a crime scene where TVA soldiers were found killed. He proceeded to ask a young child who was present on who killed the men in the church. The child then pointed to a stained glass of a devil.
Unfortunately, that was all just coincidence.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, director Kate Herron revealed it was actually a reference to the title character — Loki.
“It’s honestly just a super weird coincidence. Like, it’s genuinely a reference to Loki — the horns, he was cast out of heaven, that’s what it’s a reference to. Because we filmed that a long time before — I think WandaVision must have been in post when we filmed that. I did see all the stuff about that online and I was like, ‘Oh, this is going to be interesting.’ But no, it’s more relevant to the themes of our show and it’s not a nod to that character.”
In the same interview, writer Michael Waldron was intrigued with the theories going around about Mephisto. He tells ET, “That’s interesting. I was just reading about that character. It’s interesting if that character ever showed up in the MCU.”
Sorry, everyone. No Mephisto here.
