NOC Interview: Tye Sheridan on His New Film, ‘The Card Counter’

Tye Sheridan portrays Cirk in Focus Features’ The Card Counter. The film is a new dark thriller that comes from Paul Schrader and deals with both the idea of redemption and revenge. The Card Counter will be released in theaters on September 10.

Redemption is the long game in Paul Schrader’s THE CARD COUNTER. Told with Schrader’s trademark cinematic intensity, the revenge thriller tells the story of an ex-military interrogator turned gambler haunted by the ghosts of his past decisions.

Sheridan made his film debut at the age of 11 in Terrence Malick’s Tree of Life. The film premiered at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival and received three Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. The actor recently wrapped production on The Tender Bar for Amazon. Upcoming, he will begin production on Black Flies, also serving as Executive Producer on the film. Sheridan starred in Lionsgate’s Voyagers and can be seen in Quibi’s thriller Wireless as well. In 2019, he reprised his role as Scott Summers/Cyclops in the latest installment of the X-Men franchise, X-Men: Dark Phoenix. He also starred in Spielberg’s Ready Player One for Warner Bros.

The actor was in multiple character-driven independent films, including The Night Clerk, which he also produced, The Yellow Birds, Detour, Age Out, and The Mountain. Other credits include Dark Places, Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, The Forger, Mud, and Joe, which earned him the Marcello Mastroianni Award for best upcoming young actor at the 70th Venice International Film Festival in 2013.

He founded Wonder Dynam, alongside Nikola Todorovic, in 2017. Wonder Dynamics’ focus is utilizing Artificial Intelligence and machine learning to develop cutting-edge technologies, innovate production tools, and create original content. Their first product, Wallace Interactive, is a patented technology that allows viewers to have a conversation with characters inside of a TV show or a movie, utilizing AI. Wonder Dynamics is building an AI platform that will significantly speed up the production and post-production process for content involving CG characters and digital worlds. The goal of the platform is to reduce the costs associated with these productions by automating the “objective” part of the process, leaving the artists with the creative, “subjective” work. By doing this, they hope to create more opportunities and empower filmmakers with visions exceeding their budget.
