Caterina Scorsone Discusses All Things ‘Grey’s Anatomy’

Caterina Scorsone stars as Dr. Amelia Shepherd in ABC’s hit series, Grey’s Anatomy. The beloved medical drama is now on season 18. New episodes air Thursdays at 9pm ET. The actress also portrayed the character of Amelia in the spin-off, Private Practice.

Recipient of the 2007 Golden Globe Award for Best Drama Television Series and nominated for multiple Emmys, including Outstanding Drama Series, Grey’s Anatomy is considered one of the great television shows of our time. The high-intensity medical drama, now in its 18th season, follows Meredith Grey and the team of doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial who are faced with life-or-death decisions daily. They seek comfort from one another, and, at times, more than just friendship. Together they discover that neither medicine nor relationships can be defined in black and white.

Scorsone began acting when she was eight years old on the long-running Canadian children’s program, Mr. Dressup. She has guest starred as Dr. Shepherd on multiple episodes of Station 19, a Grey’s spin-off. Prior, the actress can be seen in the action-thriller The November Man and the crime-mystery Edge of Darkness. She also found herself in Wonderland playing a dynamic spin on the iconic character of Alice for Syfy Network’s acclaimed 2009 miniseries, Alice. Her performance earned her a second Gemini nomination. Other credits include ABC’s Castle, STARZ’s Crash, and starring in W Network’s crime-drama 1-800-Missing.

In recent years, her passion and purpose has been centered on her daughter, Pippa, who was born with Down syndrome. While raising Pippa, Scorsone has become an advocate for the cognitively diverse— a term she believes will help end stigmas and social biases about those born with developmental differences— championing every tick of the needle on the path towards acceptance and inclusion. The actress consistently uses her platform to bring a greater understanding to Down syndrome, sharing the message that “it’s all about difference, not disability.”

GLOBAL honored the actress as a 2020 Quincy Jones Exceptional Advocacy Award Recipient.

I had the best conversation with the actress about the character of Amelia Shepherd, her journey on Grey’s Anatomy, the importance of complex female characters, how vulnerability and strength go together, new generations discovering the series and becoming fans, which character she would want to bring back on the show (dead or alive), Amelia’s new opportunity, using her voice and platform to help people, Down syndrome awareness month, and so much more!
