During a roundtable with Renner, I had the chance to talk with him about tackling some important issues with his new show as well as his favorite aspect of bringing attention and a platform to topics like these.

“I think, working with Taylor, as I had in the past, it’s that first and foremost, because I know already this is based on something that’s truthful and that there’s value to it. It’s not just entertainment for entertainment sake, and which it is, it’ll be entertaining, it’ll be thrilling,” the actor told me. “If it was a book, you wouldn’t put it down, you know what I mean? You’d binge-watch this, if you possibly could, I promise you that’ll be the case.”

MAYOR OF KINGSTOWN follows the McLusky family – power brokers in Kingstown, Mich., where the business of incarceration is the only thriving industry. Tackling themes of systemic racism, corruption and inequality, the series provides a stark look at their attempt to bring order and justice to a town that has neither.

“When I first sat down and said yes to this project, I was already sitting on set and I hadn’t read one word yet because I already knew what Taylor was going to put down and I believe in that. So it’s really, really exciting to have just the foundation of ten stories kind of come out in front of you. I had to read the first five, then put it down, take a break and then read the last five, take a breath. It picks up and it picks up with a lot of steam. I can’t wait for you guys to see it, man. It’s gonna be pretty exciting,” Renner expressed to The Nerds of Color.
