The second season of the hit comedy-drama ‘The Great’ returns this Friday and there’s a lot going on for the mother-to-be Catherine (Elle Fanning) who has just overthrown her husband Peter (Nicholas Hoult) for the Russian throne.
Season two finds Catherine quickly learning that she must do whatever it takes to bring enlightenment to the country — even if they don’t want it. She also must deal with her impending motherhood just as her dear mother (Gillian Anderson) pays her a visit.
Meanwhile, Peter is still struggling between his love for Catherine and his need to be the ruler of Russia. Also, he is determined to win his mother-in-law’s favor in order to get closer to Catherine, who still despises him. Fanning says that there is a reason why Peter is still alive and audiences will see the love-hate relationship between the two develop even further.
As for the others in Catherine and Peter’s close circles, Marial (Phoebe Fox) is a noble again and is enjoying the high life as the Empress’ best friend — meaning everyone is basically sucking up to her. Fox reveals that although Marial is enjoying her time back at the top, but she hasn’t forgotten where she was. Orlo (Sacha Dhawan) is going through his own personal journey this season and what it means to be cruel to be kind.
Grigor (Gwilym Lee) and Arkady (Bayo Gbadamosi) may not have the best taste in women, but actors Lee and Gbadamosi says the characters don’t see it that way. Oddly enough, Grigor and Arkady love their wives and they both love Peter (as a best friend who could kill them at any time, of course). But, we’ll see Grigor’s devotion to Peter this season — despite Peter banging Georgina (Charity Wakefield) multiple times in front of him.
