Prepare Yourself For ‘Repossession’

For all you horror lovers out there, there is a fantastic horror film created by Asians and starring Asians that is worthy of your attention and that’s Ming Siu Goh and Scott C. Hillyard’s horror thriller Repossession. Before I go more into it, the film is now available across digital platforms, courtesy of Gravitas Ventures.

Taking place in the high-stakes, high-stress world of upper-middle-class Southeast Asia, the film centers on 50-year-old Jim (Gerald Chew), who has constructed a perfect life in the world’s most expensive city. When he is unexpectedly laid off, he desperately clings onto the symbols of his success, while wrestling with resurfacing demons from his past. Repossession’s ensemble also includes Amy Cheng, Sivakumar Palakrishnan, Rachel Wan, and Matthew Loo.

I first caught this film during the 2020 Horrible Imaginings film festival (which went on to win Best Score, Best Screenplay, and Best Actress) because its themes were all too painfully relevant as it deals with financial distress and the devastation of sudden unemployment. To say anything more about this film would be a disservice without spoiling the many frightening layers underneath. Truly, do yourself a huge favor and watch this film not only to support Asian horror filmmakers but a film that deserves merit on its own accord.

You can watch Repossession via Apple TV or iTunes.
