NOC Exclusive: Creating Panda Mei in BTS ‘Turning Red’ Clip

MIDDLE SCHOOL MAYHEM – In Disney and Pixar’s all-new original feature film “Turning Red,” 13-year-old Mei Lee, a confident-but-dorky teenager, is surviving the mayhem of middle school with a little help from her tightknit group of friends. Featuring the voices of (from left to right) Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as Priya, Rosalie Chiang as Mei, Ava Morse as Miriam, and Hyein Park as Abby, “Turning Red” will debut exclusively on Disney+ (where Disney+ is available) on March 11, 2022. © 2022 Disney/Pixar. Disney and Pixar’s Turning Red was a smashing hit on the studio’s exclusive streaming platform. I know I’m guilty of watching it more than a couple of times since its release. But now, the animated film is ready for its home entertainment release. And to celebrate its recent digital platform launch and its 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on May 3, The Nerds of Color partnered up with Disney and Pixar to share an exclusive one-minute behind-the-scenes featurette about Panda Mei.

The Turning Red behind-the-scenes clip centers mainly on the animation process of Panda Mei. It features many creative artists involved during the film’s production, including production designer Rona Liu, who said they wanted Panda Mei to “feel like a cute but messy monster.”

The clip also talks about Panda Mei’s grooming, how she would interact with her surrounding environment, and some of their tricks to help with a few scaling issues. Though it may be only a minute long, it’s a fascinating look at the number of artists and departments involved in making a film of this size.

Turning Red will be available on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on Tuesday, May 3.
