D23Expo: ‘Andor’ Teases A Dark and Gritty ‘Star Wars’ Spy Thriller

The D23 Expo is currently underway, which means we are getting a first hand look at some of the new content that will appear in film or on Disney+. After yesterday’s animation, live-action, and Pixar panel, Disney shared a few sneak peeks at Lucasfilm. And they started things off with Andor, the highly anticipated prequel series to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Set five years before the events of Rogue One, the series follows Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) who joins the Rebel Alliance as a spy fed up with the Galactic Empire.

Though there’s nothing we can really add that hasn’t already been covered by us, the newest trailer gives us a look at the state of the galaxy. And things are not good for anyone, especially those who are trying to rally others to rise up against the Empire. While Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly) tries to use diplomacy as a edge, it looks like Andor has other means to overturning the Empire by spying and assassination.

Honestly, the trailer teases a new unsettling perspective of the Star Wars universe. And its a refreshingly dark and very welcomed take on a galaxy that has more to it than Jedi Knights, Sith Lords, roguish bounty hunters, and droids. And to see Tony Gilroy shine a light on the politics and espionage of Star Wars is exciting.

Stellan Skarsgård, Forest Whitaker, Adria Arjona, Denise Gough, Kyle Soller, Fiona Shaw and Faye Marsay also star.

Toby Haynes, Susanna White and Benjamin Caron direct specific episodes, and Kathleen Kennedy, Tony Gilroy, Sanne Wohlenberg, Diego Luna and Michelle Rejwan executive produce. Tony Gilroy is also the creator and showrunner.

The first episodes of Andor drops exclusively on Disney+ on September 21, 2022.

Here’s the official plot synopsis for Andor:

Andor, a spy thriller from Lucasfilm filmed over two 12-episode seasons, takes place five years before the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The era featured in Andor is filled with danger, deception and intrigue where Cassian will embark on the path that is destined to turn him into a rebel hero. Andor presents Star Wars from a different perspective, focusing on everyday people whose lives are affected by the Empire. The decisions they make have real consequences, and the stakes for them — and the galaxy — couldn’t be higher.
