D23Expo: Star Wars Animation Expands with ‘Tales of the Jedi’

Dave Filoni brought his love for all things Star Wars to the Clone Wars animated series. While he has made the jump to live-action, directing a handful of episodes of The Mandolorian, he found his way back to animation with shows like The Bad Batch — a series that focuses on a team of specialized clones who go on black-ops missions that no other Clone dare go on. But just in time for the D23 Expo celebration, Filoni announced a brand new series of shorts called Tales of the Jedi. And he revealed a first look at the upcoming six-episode series.

Six brand-new animated shorts featuring parables built around Jedi from the prequel era. Journey into the lives of two distinctly different Jedi — Ahsoka Tano and Count Dooku — each will be put to the test as they make choices that will define their destinies.

Based on the trailer, the series it meant to give us an origins story to Ahsoka and Dooku. Which makes sense for the former, considering that Filoni was the one who brought the character to life in the Clone Wars. But seeing Dooku’s fall brings in a new and interesting twist as we will get a better sense of why he ultimately chose the dark side.

All episodes of Tales of the Jedi are set to drop exclusively on Disney+ on October 26, 2022.

While Filoni didn’t share a teaser, audiences were treated to a brand new new image from the upcoming 16-episode second season of the animated series The Bad Batch and announced that the show would be returning January 2023.

Months have passed since the events on Kamino and the Bad Batch continue their journey navigating the Empire after the fall of the Republic. They will cross paths with friends and foes, both new and familiar, as they take on a variety of thrilling mercenary missions that will take them to unexpected and dangerous new places.

Star Wars: The Bad Batch features the voices of Dee Bradley Baker and Michelle Ang, with Filoni, Carrie Beck, Athena Portillo, Brad Rau and Jennifer Corbett serving as executive producers. Rau is also serving as supervising director with Corbett as head writer. Revealed today: the series will begin streaming on Disney+ with a two-episode premiere on Jan. 4, 2023.
