Lilly Singh, Tahj Mowry, and Saara Chaudry can be seen starring alongside The Electric Mayhem Band in The Muppets Mayhem. The new series is now streaming on Disney+.
The Muppets Mayhem follows The Electric Mayhem Band — Dr. Teeth on vocals and keyboards, Animal on drums, Floyd Pepper on vocals and bass, Janice on vocals and lead guitar, Zoot on saxophone, and Lips on trumpet — on an epic, music-filled journey to record their first-ever studio album. With the help of a driven young music executive, Nora, the old-school Muppet band comes face to face with the current day music scene as they try to finally record their first studio album.
“Muppets are just fun, to be honest. They’re just fun, they’re relatable, but my favorite thing about them is that they all look different, you know? They all are a different color, they all sound different, they’re all different shapes and sizes, but they’re a team, and they come together and they’re a unit,” Mowry told me.
“I think, for me, it’s sometimes I catch myself taking life a little too seriously and the Muppets are a really good reminder that it doesn’t have to be that serious,” Singh expressed. “After shooting every day on set, I would drive home and be like, ‘Is any problem really that big of a problem when you’re talking to a Muppet?’ So, I feel like they just remind people of joy and a youthfulness in everyone where we can be a little bit just nicer to ourselves and other people, they give you that lightness.”
Chaudry continued by sharing, “Working with them was just like consistently a pinch-me moment. I would walk onto set every day and there would be something going on with them that I would just be like, ‘This cannot be real life right now. This is not normal,’ but it was and that was our reality for several months. I think it was also really cool kind of tying into what Tahj was saying that we were also actors of color that were working with these characters that stand for so much by simply existing on screen. I think there’s a time and place to comment on people’s identity in shows, but I also really love the fact that there didn’t need to be commentary on the fact that we were like two South Asian sisters. We just were and we took up space, and Tahj takes up space and that’s really powerful.”
