Gareth EdwardsThe Creator is one of the most anticipated films of the Fall season. And with good reason. Not only is it an original story packed with stunning visual work, but it also has a stacked cast lead by John David Washington. Now, with the release just a few short weeks away, 20th Century Studios has released the final trailer for the film.

During our coverage of the film, we’ve heard from Edwards, who said that The Creator was a sci-fi family drama that took cinematic inspiration from works like Lone Wolf and Cub, Apocalypse Now, Blade Runner, and Paper Moon. The first seems to make sense considering how Joshua (Washington), a human, takes it upon himself to protect an AI that has taken the form of a young child (Madeleine Yuna Voyles), while humans wage a war against artificial intelligence.

Since Edwards is a visual storyteller, much of the work that we see requires little to no green screen. The goal was to make The Creator as realistic as possible and give the actors the freedom to perform without ever stopping to reset the lights or sets. And tie all of this in with practical shooting locations like the beaches of Thailand or their particle accelerator. In effect, Edwards wanted to have something futuristic but still feel real and something that audiences can connect to emotionally.

The Creator also stars Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe, Sturgill Simpson, and Allison Janney.

The Creator hits theaters and IMAX starting on September 29, 2023.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

The Creator is set amidst a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence. Joshua (Washington), a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife (Chan), is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war…and mankind itself. Joshua and his team of elite operatives journey across enemy lines, into the dark heart of AI-occupied territory, only to discover the world-ending weapon he’s been instructed to destroy is an AI in the form of a young child (Voyles).
