Millie Bobby Brown executive produces and stars as Elodie in Damsel, which is now streaming on Netflix. Please note: this interview will contain major spoilers.
A dutiful damsel agrees to marry a handsome prince, only to find the royal family has recruited her as a sacrifice to repay an ancient debt. Thrown into a cave with a fire-breathing dragon, she must rely on her wits and will to survive.
“I think not even in this industry, but just as a girl, of course, I felt underestimated and it’s my mission to prove those people wrong. And then as you grow, you start to go, ‘Do I need to prove them wrong? Do I even need to try?’ You know, it’s like, ‘Why? Why?’ Like, I don’t need to waste my time doing that. I know who I am. I know my truth,” the actress explained to me, reflecting on moments when she has felt underestimated in the same way her character was. “I know that many, many young girls and women in schools and workplaces deal with feeling underestimated because of double standards, and yeah, I think absolutely it’s very, very important to remember to never underestimate yourself and the second you place self-doubt is when you lose.”
We discussed the film’s unexpected ending, the moment when her character finally realizes just how strong she is, what advice Elodie would share with viewers who relate to her story, how producing allows her to be involved in the process from start to finish, and more.
