Nearly three years to the date since it was officially announced, fans are finally getting their first glimpses at Bruce Timm’s return to animating Gotham: Batman: Caped Crusader, debuting later this year on Prime Video.
When Batman: Caped Crusader was first announced in May 2021, it was paired with My Adventures with Superman and supposed to be on Cartoon Network and HBO Max. After Discovery took over Warner Bros., Caped Crusader was one of the initial Bat-casualties (still not getting over Batgirl) until Amazon swooped in and saved the day.
Now, the long awaited animated series from Timm and co-creators Matt Reeves and JJ Abrams has a premiere date: August 1, 2024!
To celebrate the announcement, Entertainment Weekly sat down with Timm and character designer James Tucker for an exclusive interview and images showcasing the show’s film noir aesthetic.
Some notable takeaways from the interview include:
- Like Batman: The Animated Series, the show will lean heavily into the art deco aesthetic of the original Detective Comics era. Unlike, B:TAS, however, Caped Crusader will be a full-on period piece set in the 1940s.
- To fully reinforce the show’s ’40s setting, Batman’s costume will appear as it did in those early comics — short gloves, minimalist chest symbol, and extended bat ears. Villains like Catwoman and Clayface will also appear in their Golden Age variations.
- The biggest departure from the comics — and previous animated iterations — will be Harley Quinn. The character that was invented for B:TAS will be reinvented for Caped Crusader. Instead of tying her to the Joker, Harley Quinn will stand on her own. Moreover, the character, who will be portrayed as Asian American in the series, won’t be a doctor at Arkham but will instead be Bruce Wayne’s psychiatrist!
