What more is there to say about the legend of Donnie Yen that hasn’t already been communicated through his fists? The unparalleled actor and master of martial arts was recently seen giving John Wick a hard time in John Wick: Chapter 4 last year. But we’re not done with this seeing-impaired assassin just yet! Lionsgate is officially moving forward with a Caine spin-off!
Officially announced today, Lionsgate is expanding the world of John Wick in a monumental way with yet another spin-off film. As folks know, next year will see the first of two spin-off movies with Ana de Armas starring in Ballerina coming on June 6, 2025. And now it’s been revealed that Yen will be reprising his role as Caine from John Wick: Chapter 4 for his own spin-off movie that will be going into production sometime in 2025.
For those who’ll recall, Caine was one of the few assassins that was able to get out of the business with The High Table, for the sake of his daughter. However, he was forced back in by The Marquis de Gramont to eliminate John Wick. And in doing so, began a chain of events that resulted in the death of Wick’s friend, and manager of the Osaka Continental, Shimazu (Hiroyuki Sanada), and a quest for vengeance from Shimazu’s daugther Akira (Rina Sawayama). In a post-credit scene from Chapter 4, Akira was right about to confront Caine in retaliation.
Yen is, of course, one of the best and most legendary action stars in the industry. And watching his action scenes as Caine both against and alongside Keanu Reeves produced some of the finest stuntwork and on-screen fights we’ve ever seen in cinema in the past decade! Seeing a spin-off of him will be amazing! But I have to ask what does this mean for Akira and the post-credits tease from Chapter 4?
I suppose we’ll be finding out real soon!
