On September 26, 2013, the Cordyceps outbreak reached critical mass, resulting in a catastrophic pandemic that destroyed the world (fictionally). That is how The Last of Us began. To commemorate the day that kicked off one of the best video game stories of the past decade, HBO has released a teaser for season 2 of one of the best video game adaptations ever, with a new trailer for the second season of The Last of Us.
Fans of the game will recognize the familiar strands of “Future Days” by Pearl Jam. It is a tune that essentially made all of us weep openly as we progressed through the events of The Last of Us Part II.
[Ed. (Vedder) note: When the show changed the year of the outbreak to 2003, the producers used a Pearl Jam song from 2003’s Riot Act diegetically. Since Lightning Bolt could not have been released in this timeline, how is Joel going to play “Future Days” on the guitar? —KC (PJ enthusiast)]
By the way the trailer looks, it seems as if the show will be naturally following the events of the game quite closely! We get our first glimpses of new characters like Dina (Isabella Merced), Jesse (Young Mazino), and of course, Abby (Kaitlyn Dever). As well as new looks at Joel and Ellie this season, and Catherine O’Hara’s mysterious original character.
Take a look here. And if you played the second game, and are watching this, try not to cry!
We also got some amazing artwork of Joel, Ellie, and Abby courtesy of HBO, that we’re going to share here:
The Last of Us Season 2 will officially hit HBO in 2025! Stay tuned to The Nerds of Color for more news and future coverage as we get closer to its release!
Happy Last of Us Day Everyone!
