Ever wonder what it’d be like to work on a high stakes, cinematic universe film installment? Well this Sunday, prepare to find out, as HBO debuts The Franchise — the latest comedy from Sam Mendes (1917), Armando Iannucci (Veep), and Jon Brown (Succession). This morning, we got a look at the trailer for the new show officially premiering this Sunday, on HBO.
The Franchise represents a satirical look at the studio system, and the building of an MCU-like multi-film cinematic universe, and the hell it wrecks on the creatives involved. As a fan of Marvel Studios, I raised my eyebrows at the prospect of this one, as many of the critiques for superhero films these days really are broad and elitist. But The Franchise doesn’t strictly condemn the genre, rather the money-first mentality that goes into rushing product that has the potential to be great if the creatives involved get to make the movie they want, without excessive studio interference.
Take a look here:
The Franchise stars a terrific comedic ensemble, including Himesh Patel, Aya Cash, Daniel Bruhl, Billy Magnussen, Jessica Hynes, and the legendary Richard E. Grant.
We have a lot more to come on The Nerds of Color for The Franchise. So keep an eye out on the site for interviews with the cast and creators soon!
