Billy Crystal, Judith Light, and Jacobi Jupe star in Before. All ten episodes of the character-driven psychological thriller are now streaming on Apple TV+. These interviews will contain major spoilers for the series finale.

Before” is about Eli, a child psychiatrist who, after recently losing his wife, Lynn, encounters a troubled young boy who seems to have a haunting connection to Eli’s past.

“Sarah and I worked together on that ending. I pitched sort of a compilation of let’s do a recap: he seems okay, he’s in a better place, he went away for a while, got himself mentally together, he’s able to walk into that bathroom that we’ve seen was a disaster for him. She liked it, liked it, liked it, and then she said, ‘I took a pass, but I tried a little something at the end,’” Crystal, who is also an executive producer, explained. “He looks in the mirror, you think he’s gonna shave and be a new man, and there’s one of those little things on his forehead. I just dropped. I thought, ‘Well, that’s great,’ and it’s like, it ain’t over, folks. It ain’t over.”

“I was sad when I had to go, but I was glad that Noah got to be peaceful and happy,” Jupe shared. “I was just really happy that he could have that because he’s not really had that in his life so far.”

Light expressed, “From the very beginning when he’s looking at the picture of the farmhouse on the refrigerator, then Noah draws the farmhouse, and then, Noah draws the three people, and also, then you see that Lynn has drawn different things in her children’s book work. You see what has happened is that when Eli and Lynn first meet, when they are younger, and they have used AI to de-age us, there is that soul connection that happens instantaneously. It’s that thing that happens with many people I know that have said when they meet someone, they say, ‘Oh, I know you. How do I know you?’ And they go, ‘I don’t know,’ but to what do we attribute that? So we feel that between Lynn and Eli, and also this message that Lynn has been trying to give him all through the ten episodes, which is there’s more than science and facts. There is something else.”

We discussed the undeniable connection between their characters, the mystery, and how the story ends.
