In the expansive world of Star Wars, the second season of Andor paints a vivid portrait of rebellion, insurgency, and the human cost of systemic oppression. As the series continues to explore the rise of the Rebel Alliance, it’s not just a story of a galaxy-wide fight against an authoritarian empire. And a newly released featurette teases a very human story that speaks to truth that just so happens to take place in a galaxy far, far away.
At the heart of the narrative is Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), an orphan turned scavenger who finds himself smuggling Imperial goods before becoming a soldier and then leader of the Rebellion. Such an arc is reflected throughout history and can even be seen in present-day struggles, where marginalized communities forced into protesting against the crushing weight of injustice.
Based on the featurette, we can see that much has changed since we last left Andor in season one. Season two is meant to act as the final bridge that leads to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. In the featurette, we see brief clips of uprisings and different forms of protest like singing, calls to arms as as we can see Rebel soldiers checking blasters, strategic oppression, and Andor stealing a Tie Interceptor.
There are also some select behind-the-scenes footage which gives us a look at the size and scope of what creator, writer, and executive producer Tony Gilroy is delivering. One shot to note is we get to see a cockpit where Luna sits next to K-2SO actor Alan Tudyk in a mo-cap suit.
The video also contains fleeting clips of Ben Mendelsohn‘s Orson Krennic being devious as ever as he climbs the Galactic Empire ladder. Genevieve O’Reilly who plays Mon Motha says If season one laid the track, then season two is the juggernaut. She adds the size and scale of this production are unparalleled and the sets and the costumes are breathtaking. True to form, the video teases everything and judging by the cameras and use of drones, it’s true. All of it.
Season one also introduced us to Adria Arjona‘s Bix Caleen, Cassian’s friend and mechanic. Also Kyle Soller who plays Syril Karn, a disgraced deputy inspector who has a desperate need to impress his superiors. Denise Gough‘s Dedra Meero, the ambitious and strategic supervisor for the Imperial Security Bureau. And then there’s Stellan Skarsgård‘s Luthen Rael a secret member of the Rebel Alliance posing as a eccentric antiques dealer. Even Forest Whitaker‘s Saw Gurerra makes an appearance. And you know Saw has a vital role to play in the Star Wars expanded universe has he has appeared in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Star Wars Rebels.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
Rife with political intrigue, danger, tension, and high stakes, the series is a prequel to “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which portrayed a heroic band of rebels who steal the plans to the Empire’s weapon of mass destruction: The Death Star, setting the stage for the events of the original 1977 film. “Andor” sets the clock back five years from the events of “Rogue One” to tell the story of the film’s hero, Cassian Andor, and his transformation from disinterested, cynical nobody into a rebel hero on his way to an epic destiny.
The final season of Andor will unfold over 12 episodes broken down into four chapters of three episodes each. The first chapter will premiere April 22, with subsequent chapters debuting each week.
