Some properties for kids are so legendary, they withstand the test of time. We’ve seen multiple iterations of Garfield, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Transformers, Peter Rabbit, and Paddington hit screens big and small. Another such beloved property is Peyo’s timeless Smurfs.
Now Paramount Animation is bringing us a brand new Smurfy tale from director Chris Miller (Puss in Boots, Shrek the Third)! We had a chance to chat with Miller about bringing the Smurfs into 2025.
This has really been the summer of blue heroes trying to bring kindness back into a world that has lost it. We got to experience this with Big Blue himself in Superman, and now we have another group of blue heroes bringing it back in Smurfs. Who knows, maybe there will be crossover potential in the future.
Miller is no stranger to inheriting beloved childhood characters, having done installments in the Shrek franchise with Shrek the Third and Puss in Boots. Now, with Paramount and writer Pam Brady, he’s going to take the 60+ year old animated film and put a new spin on it, and I mean that literally because there are at least two turntables and DJs in this one.
To see what Miller had to say about bringing Smurfs to life in 2025, check out our interview with him here:
Smurfs hits theaters this Friday, July 18!
