Author Tomi Adeyemi released the first book in the series in 2018. Between debuting at No. 1 on the New York Times Bestseller list and being approached for the sale of its film rights, it was clear that the demand for an all-Black fantasy saga was desperately needed in Hollywood.
During Paramount’s presentation at CinemaCon, we had the opportunity to enjoy a full-blown dance and percussion performance, during which we saw the appearance of director Gina Prince-Bythewood and some the film’s leading cast which includes Thuso Mbedu, Viola Davis, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Idris Elba, Regina King, Damson Idris, Amandla Stenberg, Cynthia Erivo, and many more stars. Following the introductions by some of the cast who were present, we then watched the exclusive full trailer for the film.
From thrilling magic-infused fight sequences to the touching relationships between the characters, it became clear that this film’s production is full of heart and is going to make a large impact amongst audiences. It holds true to the vivid settings described in the book and clearly embraces the West African culture woven into the very fabric of the overall story and its subplots.
Leaning heavily into Yoruba culture and West African mythology, Children of Blood and Bone tells the story of lead protagonist Zélie living in Orïsha, who soon discovers a multitude of secrets that have been kept from her society, most notably the fact that those whose magical abilities were once stripped from them can in fact be reinstated.
At BookCon this past weekend in New York, I had the opportunity to chat with author Tomi Adeyemi in person about the overwhelmingly positive reception of both the presentation and the trailer. She expressed genuine gratitude in learning of its appreciation and is excited for the film’s upcoming release.
Children of Blood and Bone is currently scheduled to release in theaters on January 15, 2027.
