Season 2 is a jaw-dropping ride that gives Season 1 a run for its money. Coming in hot off the success of Season 1, expectations are high with next week’s release of the first three episodes from X-Men 97 Season 2. We had a chance to watch Episodes 1 through 4 and speak with the executive producers about their goals and hopes for the X-Men‘s future.
As a millennial who grew up smack within the target demographic of the original X-Men animated series in the ‘90s, Season 1 of X-Men 97 blew me away. With a strong character-driven plot and a commitment to pushing moral dilemmas, it was clear that we had a hit show on our hands. With Season 2 premiering next week on July 1, expectations are rightfully high.
Having watched the first four episodes last week, I can confidently say that viewers will not be disappointed with the direction the story now takes. We pick up right where we left off, and Season 2 does not take its foot off the gas. As we encounter different timelines and new issues, our favorite characters return with a new sense of purpose in the face of problematic adversary Apocalypse. We also dive into the brewing tension between the government-funded mutant group X-Factor and Cable’s newfound X-Force team. There is no shortage of action sequences, moral dilemmas, surprise cameos, and emotionally moving character relationships.
This week, we had the opportunity to speak with executive producers Eric and Julia Lewald and Larry Houston about the pressure of coming off of a highly successful first season, juggling different plot timelines, and what this iteration of animated X-Men means to them. Take a look at our full conversations below:
You can stream the first three episodes of X-Men 97 Season 2 on Disney+ on July 1.
