Anya Taylor-Joy and Drew Starkey star in Lucky, based on Marissa Stapley’s bestselling novel. The first two episodes of the new limited series are now streaming on Apple TV.
Lucky centers on a young woman (Anya Taylor-Joy) who left behind the life of crime she was raised in years ago, but must now embrace her darker, criminal side one final time in a desperate attempt to escape her past.
“Something that I was very attracted to in this is I had never played somebody with a broken heart. That wasn’t something that I had encountered in my filmography. I’d played people who were vengeful, but not somebody who had had their world destroyed by the person that they cared about the most, and I just thought that was so relatable because even if you haven’t been in a situation, which I hope most of us haven’t, where you’re being chased by the mob and the FBI at the same time, I think you know what it is to have the rug ripped out from under you,” Taylor-Joy, who also serves as an executive producer, shared. “I hope that it encourages people to think about the authorship that they have over their life, over their choices, over where they ultimately end up.”
“You want an audience to care about these people and feel like you know them, feel like these are people in your own lives, and what would happen if you were in their shoes? You want all of that and this one particularly, I mean, these scripts are drenched with backstory and these characters’ pasts,” Starkey expressed. “I feel like every one of these characters is kind of running from a ghost of their past self or a ghost of legacy. And so, that’s all you want as an actor is that type of motivation. It’s nice to have this collection of characters who all have a very specific and connected reason for doing the things that they do. So it’s such a gift.”
