Ava DuVernay to Direct ‘New Gods’ for DC

On March 15, Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment announced Ava DuVernay will be directing a live action New Gods film, based on Jack Kirby’s fabled Fourth World characters.  Of course all of twitter lit up with the news! To be honest, DuVernay’s involvement in the DC Universe is a sign that Walter Hamada is really looking to turn DC Films around after the disappointing box office of Justice League — which is available on blu-ray now.

With this announcement, plus December’s Aquaman, the in-production Shazam, and Wonder Woman 2 ramping up, DC Films is finally on some firm footing that will hopefully take the DC characters to new heights. For what it’s worth, there is already a contingent of DCEU fanbros who are not happy about the news. Which means DC must be doing something right!

Ironically, the Wrinkle in Time director responded on twitter back in December that Big Barda, a classic New Genesis character, was her favorite superhero.

Not sure if negotiations for New Gods were already underway, but DC fans should be thrilled that a Jack Kirby superfan is in charge of bringing his unique vision to the silver screen. If A Wrinkle in Time proved anything, it’s that Ava DuVernay has the capacity to translate such a fantastical world into live action. And Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok showed that Kirby-style visuals are a natural for cinematic treatment.

If you’re following us on Twitter, we’ve been fancasting New Gods characters ever since the news broke. Check the thread for our fan cast, but in the meantime I’ll leave you with the two actors I want to see for Big Barda — Ava’s fave superhero remember? — and her husband Mister Miracle (btw, you need to read Tom King’s brilliant run on Mister Miracle for DC Comics!)

Aisha Tyler as Big Barda

Steven Yeun as Mister Miracle
