The Little Mermaid is visionary filmmaker Rob Marshall’s live-action reimagining of Disney’s beloved animated musical classic, the story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea and, while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land but ultimately places her life — and her father’s crown — in jeopardy.

The reimagining honors the 1989 animated musical original, while introducing new contemporary themes. Bailey makes for a wonderful Ariel as she highlights the importance of representation and is a reflection for those who are just as curious about what’s out there as she is, has a great sense of adventure that is insatiable, and a tendency to explore the unknown. Though the additional story elements are an attempt to explore more of the world and the character dynamics, it ends up being unnecessary filler that makes the film slightly bloated. That said, the deepening of Ariel and Eric’s arcs, along with Marshall’s direction makes The Little Mermaid one of the better live-action remakes in recent memory.

However, if you are looking for a physical copy, then the 4K Ultra HD™, Blu-ray™ and DVD hits store shelves on September 19, 2023.
