The Game Continues! Production Starts on ‘Tron 3’

It’s official folks! Fourteen years after the underrated Tron: Legacy came out, Disney has officially announced that production has begun on the highly anticipated, long-awaited third chapter in its Tron series!

Shared via Instagram, news about Tron 3 has been circulating for a while, but we can now concretely say shooting has officially begun as of this week. The film is expected to star Jared Leto (for better or worse) and will be directed by Kon Tiki director Joachim Rønning (who also directed Maleficent : Mistress of Evil and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales).

I think many of us who loved Tron: Legacy were hoping this would be a direct continuation of the Flynn story, which began with the first Tron in 1982, and left off with a doozy of a finale at the end of Tron: Legacy with Olivia Wilde’s ISO-character, Quorra, entering the real world with Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund). Legacy was the first film from Joseph Kosinski, who went on to direct Best Picture contender, and highest grossing movie of last year, Top Gun: Maverick. So time will tell if the Pirates of the Caribbean 5 guy will do as good a job.

We don’t officially know for sure if this movie will abandon the events of the previous films or the cartoon series, Tron: Uprising. Hopefully not. That being said, it’s nice to return to The Grid. Tron has always been one of the most visually arresting franchises of all time. And any excuse to visit this world over and over is exciting in my book. Let’s hope they continue the story in a way befitting of the cult classics that came before it!
