HBO Originals and Max has finally released the teaser trailer to the anticipated new drama The Sympathizer. Based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, The Sympathizer is an espionage thriller and cross-culture satire about the struggles of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy (Hoa Xuande) during the final days of the Vietnam War and his new life as a refugee in Los Angeles, where he learns that his spying days aren’t over.
In the teaser trailer, the unnamed Communist soldier/spy (in the book, he isn’t given a name either) is living among the Vietnamese community in America. As he acclimate to his new life, he begins to enjoy it, but there are reminders that he is still at war and loyal to the Communist party in Vietnam.
The HBO Original limited series will debut on Sunday, April 14 at 10pm ET/PT with seven episodes on HBO and then on their streaming service Max the next day.
Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar co-showrun and executive produce. The series stars Hoa Xuande, Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le, Phanxine, Vy Le, Ky Duyen, Kieu Chinh, Duy Nguyen, Alan Trong, Sandra Oh, and Robert Downey Jr., who plays multiple roles.
