Samara Weaving is the queen of survival horror! I don’t care if that’s a hot take, as everyone has their favorite scream queen/final girl, but after Ready or Not, she’s most definitely mine. Now she’s back with a film that has so far garnered amazing reception out of SXSW this year, Azrael.
2024 certainly seems to be the year of the indie horror film. With huge successes like Longlegs and Late Night with the Devil really turning heads, there’s a good shot we’ll see another sleeper hit in Azrael. Much like A Quiet Place, the film is set up to be a very dialogue-free movie, taking place in a world where nobody speaks.
Directed by E.L. Katz (Cheap Thrills) and written by Simon Barrett (You’re Next) the premise is that a young woman named Azrael must fight for her life as she’s hunted down by the leaders of a devout community, looking to sacrifice her to save themselves from an evil force lurking in the wilderness.
Yes this is very much in the same vein of Ready or Not, but based on the trailer Azrael promises to be a lot more gritty, a lot less comedic, and completely free of dialogue. It’ll give Weaving a chance to showcase her phenomenal acting chops, and promises to put us all on the edge of our seats!

Azrael hits select theaters on September 27!
