Director E.L. Katz on the Horrors of ‘Azrael’

Spooky season is upon us folks! And with it comes a flurry of wonderful indie cinema designed to bring nightmares to life on the big screen. That’s exactly what director E.L. Katz and writer Simon Barrett (You’re Next) sought out to do with a horror film like no other, in Azrael starring horror icon, Samara Weaving.

However, there is a twist with this film! This isn’t just your regular run-of-the-mill survivor horror flick. Azrael is a post apocalyptic nightmare that takes place in a society where no one can speak, and the world is overrun by horrible zombie-like monsters! As such, the movie is a testimony to the fact that actions do, in fact, speak much louder than words, bringing dread and tension with every fast-paced, action-packed scene from beginning to end, with Weaving, of course, giving a commanding performance.

But naturally tone and performances in a film are only as good as the director in charge of calling the shots, and that’s where Katz comes in and surpasses expectations on every level. Thankfully, we got the chance to chat with him about his new movie, as well as Weaving’s terrific performance and the challenges of making, what is essentially, a mostly silent movie.
