Corruption and politics go hand in hand. Just look at the upcoming state of the presidency and the current state of the Supreme Court. And it’s an issue that the MCU is tackling in Daredevil: Born Again! “Devil’s Reign” is coming, and the only one who can stop Wilson Fisk’s rise to power as Mayor of New York City is the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen, himself: Matt Murdock! If only Daredevil existed in our world today.

When we last saw The Kingpin in last year’s Echo, he began contemplating his plans to run for Mayor of New York City. As we’re seeing today, criminals ascending to political positions of power is nothing out of the ordinary. In fact, the upcoming presidential inauguration will be the first one in history in which a convicted criminal will be taking the mantle of President of the United States.

As such, I firmly believe Daredevil: Born Again, like the Marvel Comics “Devil’s Reign” storyline will likely tackle the themes of how quickly and easily a corrupt individual can rise to power, which is an incredibly interesting topic for any superhero show to cover. It doesn’t seem to matter that Wilson Fisk served time. It seems the flaws of the legal system allow for criminals like him still have a chance at rising to the highest levels of government. So what happens when the legal system fails a “really good lawyer?”

I, for one, am incredibly excited to see Charlie Cox’s return as Matt Murdock, and in his own actual series this time, rather than as a guest star in an MCU “sitcom.” Getting to see him tackle the higher levels of corruption in New York City would definitely put him on the wrong side of the fabricated laws of a criminal individual. And I feel this is something that hits a lot more differently today than ever before.
