At San Diego Comic-Con, Sung Kang and the cast of the upcoming film Drifter spoke about the ways in which car culture highlights community and a sense of belonging. The Nerds of Color had a chance to speak with the cast about their characters and what they hope audiences take away from the film.

Drifter is presented as Sung Kang’s love letter to car culture, in which he serves as the film’s writer, director, and star. It follows the story of Tree (Kang), a racetrack janitor with a turbulent past who’s given the opportunity to compete in a professional drifting race. During the cast and crew’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Kang expressed how the title of the film served a dual meaning as it relates to both the culture surrounding car racing and his character’s loneliness. Following the panel, we had the opportunity to chat with Kang and the cast about their experiences bringing this film to life.
