Eric Bana and Sadie Sink portray Ben and Mazzy in A Sacrifice, which is based on the novel Tokyo Nobody by Nicholas Hogg. The film is now playing in theaters and this interview will contain major spoilers.
A Sacrifice is an emotionally turbulent story that follows American social psychologist Ben Monroe (Eric Bana) who is investigating a local Berlin cult connected to disturbing events. While he immerses himself in his work, his rebellious teenage daughter, Mazzy (Sadie Sink), becomes embroiled with a mysterious local boy who introduces her to the city’s underground party scene. As their two worlds head toward a dangerous intersection, Ben will need to race against the clock in order to save his daughter.

“[The ending] plays with that whole idea of like, for me, I think of the start again kind of theme throughout the movie and with that, to end with where it began,” Sink explained, reflecting on the story’s final moments. “All the kind of turmoil within her family with the first accident to mirror the last accident that instead of maybe bringing kind of this breaking point between the family, it brings just a new beginning for them, or at least for Mazzy and Ben’s connection as father and daughter.”
“The more we talk about this, the more I discover how many kind of subliminal messages are embedded in this screenplay. It’s actually even smarter than I thought it was and I always felt like it was really smart, and it was so cool for Sadie and I because in typical filmmaking structure, it was the first thing we had together — the very, very end,” Bana shared. “Talk about a trust exercise between two actors, like, ‘We’ve never worked together, I want you to just hold your breath and trust that you’re not gonna drown because of what I’m about to do.’ It was such a crazy introduction to the production.”

We discussed the script’s many subtle parallels, why the ending is such a significant full circle moment for their characters, portraying the precious relationship between a father and daughter, and much more.
