‘Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin’ Demo Showcases the Franchise’s Best Parts

A free demo of Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin is available now in the Nintendo eShop ahead of the game’s July 9 release date. The game, a sequel to its 2016 predecessor on the Nintendo 3DS and mobile devices, features some of the most unique stories built into the world of Monster Hunter.

While the spin-off of the RPG series introduced drastically different gameplay mechanics with its first installment, Wings of Ruin capitalizes on this with its own standout story to explore, one not directly tied to the first title.

The game’s director, Kenji Oguro, took great strides to address the criticisms of the first title, from character animation styles to enemy attack patterns, and the changes came through in the Wings of Ruin demo. What makes this spin-off series most unique is the bond built between Rider and Monstie, the latter usually being trapped or slain in other Monster Hunter titles.

Granted, you do encounter wild monsters that ultimately meet their end in the world of Wings of Ruin but the bond you build with your team, the moves and skills you learn together, and the exploration you embark on come together in satisfying ways. I got my hands on the demo and thoroughly enjoyed exploring Hakolo Island and grinding for all kinds of sweet loot (in the form of eggs found in different monster dens).

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin will be available July 9, 2021 on Nintendo Switch and PC.
