Spooky Season is officially over folks, but like the best horror films, there’s still time for one final scare. Alien: Romulus is coming to 4K, Blu-ray, and VHS (!) December 3, and to celebrate the release of our favorite Alien film in years, we were given the opportunity to chat with the film’s co-supervising sound editor, himself, Lee Gilmore.
However, this wasn’t an ordinary interview. We were able to chat with Gilmore at the Alien: Romulus activation on the final night of the famous Los Angeles Haunted Hayride!
Thanks to 20th Century Studios, and our friends at MRKT and Team Click, we were able to experience the LA Haunted Hayride for the first time. Just in time too, as with the Halloween season coming to a close, the ghosts, goblins, and gap-toothed killers are heading back to their crypts. However, before the horror was contained, the Haunted Hayride got one more unexpected visitor: the notorious Xenomorph from Alien: Romulus.
In the final days of the event, attendees were able to celebrate the home release of Alien: Romulus by participating in a one-of-a-kind photo op with the creepiest of galaxy killers, complete with sound and fog effects to round out their experience. And given how lost the franchise would be without the signature sounds that create the creeps and scares its known for, we were granted the opportunity to chat with Gilmore to discuss how he adapted the classic sounds of Alien while incorporating his unique gifts exclusively for Romulus. Come check out our experience at the Hayride, and our interview with Gilmore in the reel below.
(Note: We tried our best to edit out the loud rock music that was playing during the event. Sorry for any inconvenience in advance!)
With movies like Alien: Romulus and others within the same genre, sound design is so important because they establish not only the tension and scares in the movie, but also the futuristic setting these stories are set in. As a result, they’re generally rewarded with attention from Academy voters during Oscar season. I can only hope they don’t overlook Gilmore and his team’s incredible work!
Alien: Romulus is now available to own on Digital, and will be hitting 4K, Blu-ray, and VHS (!) December 3, 2024.
