Pakistani Americans Get Their Own ‘Sopranos’ in Hulu’s ‘Deli Boys’ Trailer

It’s about time we get a South Asian mobster family series! I’ve seen too many Italian mafia shows, so it’s exciting to finally see a Pakistani American family at the center of the story, using a deli as a front.

Created by Abdullah Saeed, Deli Boys is about two spoiled brothers, Raj (Saagar Shaikh) and Mir (Asif Ali), dealing with losing their successful corporate magnate father. They later find out the truth about their father — he found his wealth as a drug lord by running an underground drug and money laundering empire. Their aunt (Poorna Jagannathan) and uncle (Brian George), who are in on the business, must help the brothers navigate this new territory or stand to lose everything.

DELI BOYS – “First Look” (Disney/James Washington) POORNA JAGANNATHAN

In the hilarious trailer released today, Raj and Mir enjoy the riches of their father’s hard work. Raj comments, “It’s up to us to enjoy this life for everyone who looks like us but doesn’t have it.” They later find out after their father’s passing (by a golf ball to the head) that he’s been making his fortune by drugs and money laundering through the deli business.

Mir, who seems the most stable of the brothers, is shocked at the betrayal but must work with the slacker Raj to keep the family business alive – with the help of a murderer auntie and their scheming uncle. They must learn the ins and outs of this business — very similar to Netflix’s The Gentlemen, but make it Brown!

Two comedy actors together in a series. I’m so excited to see more South Asian stories, especially in spaces usually reserved for their white counterparts.

BRING ON THE MURDER! BRING ON THE MAYHEM!

Deli Boys premieres on March 6 on Hulu.
